Hope all of you are having a great Fall and enjoying your hunting season's !
We got a bear on Saturday, 149 live weight. One of JJ's grandson had his first opportunity to get a bear , but he missed. His other grandson also saw the bear, but could not get a shot. Very cool to see the excitement of youth, both boy's had a great day, and obviously we did as well.
We had a third bear slip between us in the corn the same day, so was a pretty good first day.
We had lots of bear sign today, but never kicked one up.
Best of luck to all of you as the seasons continue. Enjoy your time afield.

Good friend of mine decided to keep bowhunting bears even though it is rifle season. He is hunting public land. Today he set up on a heavy game trail along a big swamp in NW Pa. About mid morning, a group started driving out the swamp. Out steps a big bear. The bear slowly walks towards my buddy to about 70 yards then walks right back into the swamp once the drivers pushed past. He said if he had his rifle, it would have been an easy shot. He has taken 5 black bears so he knows what a good one looks like. He estimated this one around 400.

Wow , still a very exciting day for him ! Those critters are smart !
The one that slipped between us in the corn went between myself and a buddy, only a few rows of corn from each of us. He waited just before the headlands in the field, then darted back as we reached him. We have had that happen many times. No stopping them if they decide that's where they want to go.
We have a strict rule when driving corn fields of no shooting at a bear in the corn, unless its wounded, and then only when every hunter in the corn is accounted for and the shot is deemed safe before shooting. No bear worth a person getting shot!

I had an interesting bear hunt. I got an invite to a camp in Tionesta. Monday morning arrived and I was in my ground spot about 100-150 yards up a slight rise, and I was on the "flat top." Ten other guys in the camp were spread across a long hillside. One other group, not one that we knew, put on several drives of the areas. I had one very nice 8 or 10 point buck run within 20 yards of me. Big buck......large rack.....heavy mass. But no bear. The group driving stated they scared up 3 different bear.....but could not get a shot. There was some shooting but that was a good 600 or more yards away.
We were back out this morning in our spots. There were two groups (not affiliated with each other). One Amish and the other, "not." Both of these groups pushed out the area's around us yet none of us saw bear......or even a deer!! We were all surprised that none of us saw even a deer. Figured all the game was chased off the mountain side.
In any event, it was a good weekend and good to be out 'n about!!
