I took the shotgun for a walk and shot some squirrels today. Haven't hunted them in years. Forgot how tough those suckers are. Shot 4 and took them over to my uncle who wanted them. He wants more so Friday will get him some again.

Hunting squirrels was always my second favorite hunting-just after archery hunting. And I like to eat squirrel, rabbit and pheasant as much, or more, than just about any game.

I think hunting squirrels is the best way to introduce a kid to hunting. Nice weather, good chance of success, reading deer sign and scouting while you're out there. A kid can be taught sit still, listen for squirrels to bark and rustle through the leaves, learn the different trees and when he gets bored you can move along to another spot. I think we'd keep more of the youth as hunters if more kids spent more time getting out into the woods other than sitting in one spot waiting for deer to show up....... And, to a new hunter, a squirrel tail qualifies as a trophy .

Squirrels with an air rifle. Now thats hunting. They are fun to hunt and pretty much a dying sport. I remember going out for squirrel with my Uncle on the squirrel opener. Cars and trucks parked everywhere. Like deer season. That was in the early 80s. Times have changed for sure.

Once the leaves are off a .22 and trying for head shots is the only way to go. I even killed a couple turkeys with one over the last few years.
When the boys were young they used a single barrel 20ga or a side x side 20ga. The oldest came back for a visit a few weeks ago and took his .22 back with him to hunt squirrel on some game lands he's been scouting since he moved. I'm glad he's getting back into hunting more since he graduated.

About once a year I take my Ruger Model 77 in .22 for a squirrel walk. A great outing that puts a smile back on the old bearded face. The Model 77 feels just like a big caliber rifle and is a tack driver. I only shoot for the head with a good backstop. If only I still had Aunt Virginia around for squirell stew and biscuits.
