If the cooler days get you in the mood to take a tramp(no, not her!) in the woods. You might find some black trumpet and oyster mushrooms while you're at it. We have had a couple pretty good days lately. And, if you like chicken mushrooms, you'll probably find a few of those too.

My oldest son is the only one in our family that like the chicken mushrooms. I usually leave them unless he's going to be home. The black trumpets are great in soups and sauces. They add a great mushroom flavor to anything the are used in. The also freeze well. Won't be long 'till the sheepheads start popping. Last year was a banner year for them

The Oysters are starting to show here up North. Saw a small chicken of the woods and lions mane, waiting on them to grow some more. Rain last night and this morning will help.

Lions mane might be our favorite of all mushrooms. They are also one that we rarely find. I spent a few hours cutting grape vines and looking for mushrooms today. Only found a few chants and some old oysters. Supposed to rain tomorrow. Sunday might be a little better.

You know, I look for chaga all the time. I have never found a single piece. A hollow on my land is filled with birch(sweet birch) and I have looked on the river birch along our creek and all the birches in the northern part of our state. A friend founds a bunch on his son's property-I think it's in Clearfield county.
Do you notice any benefit from drinking the tea?

Yes - More energy and it helps with flexing the joints. If the yellow birch or white birch are damaged it seems to appear there. Sometimes it can be high up in the tree. Fall and winter are the best times to find it.

I spent a couple days at camp and snooped around for a few hours in the ANF. I found nothing, even went to my favorite sheephead area. A friend dropped off some shrimp mushrooms he found. He likes them a lot. I haven't tried them yet.

Found a bounty of chicken of the woods shrooms and all were just at the right age to pick..all were in the same little hollow on standing dead white oak....I left the bases hoping to get another round by the end of the month....

For me, Chickens are 1 tick up from spring Pheasant Backs. My description of pretty much each... You can even boil shoe leather to make it an edible form. Mind you, that's just one man, and his weird tastes. I mean, I even had a crush on the current Speaker of Der House at one point.

Anyone come across any sheepheads or tooths comb? I like sheepheads cooked with venison steak. Too dry for the shrooms this fall here.

I grind for travel and make tea bags from a coffee filter. For here at home I just break up into 1" size chunks, in a towel using a hammer. Then put about 8 pieces in the bottom of a 2qt measuring cup add about 3 cups of water and microwave. Just pour through a coffee filter. Can repeat that process with the same chunks for several days. In the morning mix it 50/50 with coffee. In the evening a shot wild turkey & honey.

Neither I've never tried it and probably won't... but I've found a number of white birch out back with the fungus and would send a piece to to someone who wanted to try it. I enjoy finding things and learning new plants, shrubs, flowers mushrooms but rarely if ever take them.
I've taken one hen of the woods and a couple morels... that's been it. I do graze some with fruits & berries.. yesterday running beagles had some autumn olive & black haw... the haw was too dried out so I stuck with the olive
