Seeing the signs of change coming..the greens aren't quite so green anymore, the golden rod in full bloom, some yellow in in the birch and some red in the sumac leaves. Fawns growing and spots disappearing. Still haven't seen a grouse chick, did see three hens yesterday and a total of three poults chicken size. Running dogs the day before yesterday found a pile of bear scat out back with what appeared to be loads of apples and I was surprised it didn't have any cherry pits in it. My wise old buddy told me there wouldn't be any in the apples.... He is 75 and we've been running dogs together for years and now looking for a place in Virginia as all his kids and grandkids are there. He and his wife are also from there and it's getting time to go back I guess. Hard to find anyone to run with anymore. No objection to running alone but it's nice to have someone point out the intricacies of bear scat.
Went for a hike the other day seeing acorns butternuts and even saw some chestnuts on game lands...that brought a smile!

Lots of apples up at camp. Our trees out back are about done for. Few blossoms, no apples. She planted them back around 1980. Two years ago those trees produced a bumper crop. Last year, far fewer apples. I usually hit 'em a few times in the spring with 10-10-10.
Have noticed a few other older apple trees around here this summer that appear to be dying. The old orchard down in York, near one of her son's place and where she's been getting apples for the deer, are on their way out also.

I have a couple ten year old Apple trees that did not produce a single apple this year and are looking pretty sad. Not many leaves. ??

My apple tree has been down back for the 13 years I've been here and it has produce every year. I have to think it was there ten or fifteen years before I owned the place. About 4 years ago I hired a tree company to look at why my one oak tree was looking bad, and also look at a hawthorn apple tree (not a regular apple tree) that was essentially dying. That Hawthorn tree has to be 30 years old.
Well, much to my surprise.....the tree company got rid of the oak tree pest, but he Hawthorn tree is as green as can be and producing its little quarter to half-dollar size "apples" like crazy!! And in addition, my regular apple tree is bearing fruit like there's no tomorrow.

The weather comedian says we are in for a heat wave with temperatures in the mid 90s for the next few days. Thank God for whoever invented whole house air conditioning. I think Ms. Doris and I will stay inside and not do any gardening or other strenuous stuff for awhile.

You know the old rhyme, Glenn?
When the weather's hot and sticky, That's not the time to dip the wicky. But when the frost is on the punkin, Now that's the time for pecker dunkin'.

My ac condenser fan won't spin until I go out there and give it a nudge with a screwdriver poked through the guard.Darn inconvenient in the middle of the night.More home maintenance coming up.

Probably all it needs is a fan start/run capacitor. Pretty eay fix. Turn power off. Disconnect breaker. Pull side panel off outdoor unit and look for a silver small beer can size capacitor. Three or so wires connected to the top. A good indication it is shot is swelling on the top of the can. Check the size and rating and head for the electrical supply or hardware store.
