Mugs is 11 years old now, Dutch. He still goes for 4 mile walks and at times acts like a puppy. We are looking forward to at least one more good season of bird hunting. I suspect that when the time comes, he will go downhill fast rather than getting old slowly. Ms. Doris and I have had a whole bunch of great friends of the English setter persuasion, but he might just be the best we have had. Lordy, but I will miss him when he goes.

I've had several dogs throughout my life. All were good dogs but the GSP we have now will be tough to beat. The entertainment value and affection she gives my family is something that's actually hard to repay her for.The kids give her a lot of attention but every time they come rushing in the door and try to blow off the dog's welcome I snap at them.I tell them every time to give the dog 5 minutes of attention and never take her for granted. They'll never get that from another human.A good dog is truly special Mutt.I hope you still have more than a few years left with Mugs.

I miss my daughter's dogs, now that she moved to Texas. She has an adopted Black Mouth Cur that is the smartest and funniest dog I've ever known. Every time that dog sees me she goes nuts! Takes her 10 minutes to settle down she's so happy.

Don't they use them for blood trailing? Squirrels, bears, and hogs. First time I had her out for a walk, we came across squirrel tracks in the snow. She went nuts! She was born in a dog shelter in Tupelo, Mississippi, lived there about a year until they shipped her to a shelter in Lancaster. They brought 50 dogs up at one time. No one seemed to want her. I guess my daughter saw something. Glad she did

Fine looking dog, mutt. Spot on about dogs giving more than they ever take, if we don't count all the expense/efforts needed to keep 'em, but who cares? I've had six dogs in my lifetime and spent many more years enjoying other people's dogs. Only ever encountered one or two dogs in my lifetime, that didn't take to me right off. We have a club neighbor who is a retired K9 officer. Dog is gone now, but his Malinois loved me to death. When I'd stop as his house, that dog ignored his commands, to run out and greet me. Used to kid him about all that money the city had spent for a trained dog and it just did what it wanted to. No exactly, but close when it came to me stopping by. He had it at our kid's fishing derby one year, had it's reflective K9 PD vest on and I was bent down so it could lick my ears. Lady asked if it was "a real police dog"? Yep, then she said it might bite my face off. Neighbor said only if he gave it the "magic command" and then there was still no guarantee it'd bite me? One dog we had that I still miss, was the lab before the crazy little one we have now. He was about the largest black lab I've ever seen and had the sweetest nature of any of our hounds. My biggest regret since he's gone, is that I didn't always stop what I was doing when he'd come in and lay his head on my knee, while I was at the desk. He did that a lot when he was older. The day I had to put him down, sat on the floor at the vets with him in my lap, for almost a half hour. Doc said he didn't need that room, take my time saying goodbye.

Denny, hardest thing is saying goodbye.
My daughter's dog got hit on the street here last September, month after Dad died. We were dog sitting. Honestly, one of the worst weeks of my life. He was such a happy dog. He came to her 6 months earlier when she hit him on a street in St Louis. He helped her get thru some bad times. In his short time, he gave back way more than he was given.

Lots of good things about dogs in this thread. I've said this before, but it bears repeating. The only totally unconditional love a person is likely to get in his/her lifetime will come from a dog.
Oh, and me too, Dutch. It's gonna be tough to deal with.
