Saturday was a good day.We met up at my buddy's camps and 15 of us headed out to hunt some SGL in Elk county. The plan was to spread out and sit the morning out til about 1:00pm and then drive. We started the walk in at daybreak and finally reached the ridgetop we planned on hunting around 8:00.Jordan,My buddy Hal,his cousin and his son all covered a big steep bowl that was between some big laurel patches and some clerarcuts.Bear sign was all over and we cut two fresh sets of tracks on the way up.We got settled in and it didn't take long for the shooting to start.About 15 minutes into it,a group below us had some bear on the move and the shooting steadily started in our direction.just as it was getting interesting,4 shots rang out directly in front of me.Figuring it may be Jordan I made my way down to him and he said a bear was coming above him and my buddy's cousin and his boy started shooting and turned the bear strait down the mountain. They went to check for blood and confirmed a hit.The five of us started on the trail and it soon became obvious that it wasn't a vital shot so Jordan and I circled down below to cut it off and they stayed on the track. It almost reached the bottom before hitting a river and made a hard left turn towards a small clearcut.I went around the clearcut to conform it didn't come out and Jordan and I set up on two sides to box it in.Within minutes, several shots rang out and they had the bear down in the clearcut. All in all,we tracked the bear over a mile before putting the final shot into it.The original shot was directly facing the shooter and he hit it head on in the chest.Bear can take a hit.

It is a lot of fun.I'm generally a designated driver as I have little desire to kill one.I like the anticipation of a well executed drive. This wasn't actually a drive but it was still pretty good.I knew the bear wasn't hit as good as they hoped but knew we would eventually catch up to it.If you blow up the first picture, you can see where that bear was hit with the first shot from a 300wsm.It was every bit of a mile before we caught up to him and finished him off.Frontal shots are very iffy.

Had one take 2 dumps all of 10 yards off my deck Saturday night. First for that in 24 years. This is the first year I've had a bear around.
Congrats on the bear.

Congrats Doug ! Just something about getting a bear going that is a rush. I didn't even carry a gun Saturday or today, but when I tracked a sow and cubs into the brush today, and the tracks split, I kinda wished I had a gun , just in case. I am sure the whole scenario was a rush for Jordan, glad he got the chance to experience that!!

I am sure the whole scenario was a rush for Jordan, glad he got the chance to experience that!! It was a rush for him but he's a little bummed that they turned that bear.If they wouldn't have shot, that bear would have ended up right in his lap.Last year we had almost the same thing happen.A bear broke through the standers and was coming right at us on the same bench we were on.A guy we didn't even know was there took a Hail Mary at it from below and turned it away from us.I found two sets of fresh tracks on sunday.I back tracked them to see where they came from and then tracked them to where they bedded. There's no guaratee but I'm fairly confident I could put them in his lap if nobody messes with them.We were gonna do it tomorrow afternoon but he has wrestling practice. We may get enough time in put on one small little drive.

Finding fresh bear tracks in the snow is neat, even when it's deer season. Many years ago my bud and I headed over to a farm during buck season. Place had a wooded hollow between hay fields and a pasture, where deer tended to hole up after a few days of pressure. He dropped me off to push the hollow, drove down to the other side and up in the hay field.
About four inches of snow on. Got down next to the woods and cut a fresh set of bear tracks heading where I was going. Never did see the bear, but it had probably ousted any deer that had been in there, because none came out the lower end like normally happened there, when I pushed it out to my buddy.
Had a good sized bear come crashing down over a wooded bank one year in buck season, in the camp neighbor's woods. I was sitting at the edge of a little clearing when I heard the racket. Bear came to a halt close by, when I yelled. Stood up, sniffed a bit, then took off again when I clapped and yelled. Couple guys pushing my woods and the neighbors, eventually came thru, had kicked it up. Back tracked it later. It had spent the night up above camp. Tracks led to a small depression that had no snow on the leaves.
Now and then a bear gets kicked out into the open during deer season. Once watched one run nonstop across the hollow, across fields and into a patch of woods. Them rascals can really move when they want to.

Buckhorn hunting camp out in bald eagle state forest took two opening day in first drive. Yours truly harvested a 170# boar, the other a 113# sow by a guest, also a first time bear hunter.. I would post pics but having "issues" We had 14" of snow with an unfrozen ground underneath and chains were a necessity...many a hunter tried without and there were alot of stuck vehicles.
