From looking at this section and the Hunting dog section small game hunting is dead or very close to it ? For me one nail in its coffin is the Pheasant stamp ! For all the Ringnecks I ever shot the fee is" a nope not me thing ". I have seen very few rabbits over the years dead on the roads here. I have been here for 18 years ! RIP Small game hunting ?

There are a few of us who still go bird hunting, wily. I do it because my English setter, Mugs, loves it. Without him, bird hunting would be pointless (LOL).

still run my beagles (down to 3 now) and squirrel hunt on occasion
I wouldn't worry about not seeing dead rabbits on the road..I've always found way more in the bushes than on roads
squirrel numbers look good this year, saw 5 yesterday on a hike on sgl.

I used to love grouse hunting but they're turning into an endangered species.I used to also love hunting rabbits but we don't really have the right habitat around here like we did back in Wyoming country.I was never into ditch chickens until my son got his first taste of hunting over a good bird dog last year.Since then,I got him a bird dog and that's what you'll find us doing most days in the fall.I have killed some pheasants this fall but most days I don't even carry a shotgun.Watching my son work with his own dog is just one of those things that's hard to explain. It's not about the birds or the shooting. It's about watching an enthusiastic dog and an enthusiastic kid working together. There's nothing better than watching the dog getting all birdy, locking up on point, the flush,a nice shot from punk kid that drops the bird in an impenetrable mess, then the dog, after a short search comes out with a bird in her mouth. For some reason,I never tire of watching that.

I don't know where you are exactly but figure you have to be somewhere in the vicinity of sgl 44. I was up there several times on habitat projects and one in particular around the Brandy Camp area I saw rabbit sign on top of rabbit sign.
I mentioned that to RSB and he said it's loaded come on up and hunt. Never took him up on it..Just don't hunt where I volunteer my time..my own quirk. But the sign was extremely impressive.

I just started hunting SGL 44 this past season.I haven't seen a rabbit there but there's habitat for them in that particular area.

I grew up hunting small game.Squirrels in the early season, then rabbits and pheasants.Kept my gear by the back door to squeeze in an hour after school.Saturday mornings I had to clean a section of chicken house plus the daily feeding and egg gathering. Then I could go hunting. Some Sundays we had pheasant for dinner instead of a layed out Leghorn. In the early season I patrolled a lane between cornfields and woods. The squirrels would run from the corn across the lane and provide practice for shooting running rabbits.
