Well,I went out last night and drew some blood on a big doe.It was a good night with about 11 or 12 doe and fawns within range.Just for the heck of it,I bought a pack of grim reaper expandables and wasn't impressed.Complete passthrough and the deer went probably 100-125 yards.First time in years I had one that didn't drop in sight.I'm firmly convinced that when an expandable opens,it either scares the deer or causes pain, making them take off like a raped ape.

That is an interesting observation Doug. I am thinking back through my archery deer, fixed vs expandable. I can remember 1 deer shot with a fixed that jumped like it was stung by a bee, then stood there until it got wobbly legged and fell over. I think that is about the only one I can think of that happening too though. Been using expandables for many more years than fixed and while deer do run, typically they do not run far. The other think I have going against me is I aim for the opposite let, puts the arrow right through where you need. The deer really takes off though when you hit that other leg bone.

The one I remember best is a doe shot by a friend of mine. I was within about 50 yards watching on binoculars. The doe was feeding. He shot right through the lungs behind the shoulder. At the shot the Doe jerked like they do when they are startled, but just stood in the same spot. She reached around and sniffed at the spot the arrow went through and lifted here hind leg to scratch the spot. Put her leg back down and collapsed on the spot.
Deer are not Disney characters. She had no idea what happened, only that she heard a noise that startled her, and an itch that needed scratching.
By the way, this was in about 1965. Recurve and probably a Fred Bear Razorhead.

I used to use a variety of expandable and the result was always the same, even with huge holes. The last 70 or so deer I've killed have been with a tiny fixed head and they run 30-50 yards, stop, look around, wobble and fall over.I've even hit several too far back and they just walk a little ways and lay down.More than once I've sat in my tree for a couple hours and just watched them lay there until they died. This deer last night was shot through the ribs,no leg bone or shoulder was hit.

I'm not killing any more doe until the temps drop.By the time I got her loaded, hung and the quarters in the fridge,it was almost midnight. In all honesty,I wasn't 100% sure where I hit her, even though I thought it was a good hit and assumed it was way too far back by the way she just kept running. My rule is,If I don't see or hear them crash, assume a bad hit and come back in the morning. It was too warm for that so I went back out around 9:30.I didn't have any problems finding her but that's a late night.

Since I've been using Muzzys (late 80s) I have seen no reason to change. More than half have drop withing sight and near all the other have drop in far less than 100yards. They also shot nearly in the same hole as a fieldpoint of the same weight.

My last 7 bucks were shot with 150gr. Boltcutters. Fixed blade. Deadly.
