Everything is a matter of perspective.I would get no satisfaction from hiring a guy to do my scouting and preparations for me,especially in Pa.I'd much rather kill a mediocre animal on my own than a huge bull that someone showed me.It really depends on what unit you'd get drawn for. Some units are pretty remote and they don't have a high elk density. Those units could certainly be a challenge.Others have a lot more elk and if you put a few days in,finding one should be no problem if you concentrate on where they should be.In all honesty,if you arrived a day a head of time without any pre-season scouting,it wouldn't be hard to figure out where to start.I had a guy call me last year who was from Indiana. He drew a bull tag on the eastern part of the elk range, which I'm not real familiar with.He wanted to know if I'd be willing to haul one out with my horses but it was further than I wanted to travel on short notice.I gave him a few names of people who could help him.I believe someone gave him use of their camp and he ended up killing a giant bull, completely on his own.You don't have a whole lot of time to scout once you're drawn, even if you're willing to make the drive.Enough local people will give you a heads up on where to start.Drawing a tag in Pa is the perfect opportunity to kill an elk without having to spend a fortune.

Exactly. Why turn it into another several thousand dollar Elk hunt?

Exactly. Why turn it into another several thousand dollar Elk hunt? Glad we're finally on the same page Mike!! If I had unlimited time and unlimited money.....likely would try to plan a full blown DIY hunt. If I lived in the elks living room....would obviously go with what Doug would do same as all my local domain hunting. My earlier post:"Yupper....its my money that's exactly why I would go a pro guide vs making several 400 mile round trips to scout an area(s), incur food/lodging costs on scouting trips in addition incurring similar costs on week of the hunt..... not even factoring in what my time is worth in addition to the benefits of hunting with a professional. It's really a nobrainer for someone who lives well outside of the hunting grounds in addition who has never set foot within the same. "

My first Moose hunt I had no money to scout. Had never even been to Danville VT before. My first day hunting was my first day scouting. I had things figured out by day 3. I jumped a giant bull that I couldn't get a shot at. On day 6 I got this guy. Attachment Deleted

We were driving back from my son's bb game in Kersey yesterday evening and there were three huge bulls right along rt 255.Considering that fact, that many of the bulls are still holding onto their racks into April,it's amazing how much they grow in such a short period of time.
