Left for my brother's in northern Potter Thursday evening to end our spring season with a 3 day hunt starting Friday and ending memorial day. Take my wife out Friday and we get in to a bunch of birds early only to have the real hens lead them far away from us. Well Saturday comes and the wife opts to "enjoy" some of her holiday and sleep in but I am out the door at 4 am. I work a great bird for over a hour only to have him go down over the steepest part of the mountain. My brother and I believe this is the same bird we have tried to kill for the 3 previous seasons and we believe this bird is now 4 or 5 yrs old. I hunt till 1030 and call it a morning. In the pm my brother and I make plans to go out and head to two different areas in this huge valley that we know birds like to cruise through all day long. He is on the west side and I am on the east side. We leave the truck at 615 and head in to setup. The plan is to just call every 10 or 15 minutes and sound like a content feeding hen and see what happens. I am setup at 646 and know he is probably also as he is directly across the valley from me. At 717 I hear the blast from his 20 and know he is tug out in PA. I smile and make a series of yelps and get a series of yelps back at me from a hen with a gobble right after it. Game on !
She sounds to be about 80 yds and he sounds about 200+ out the side of the mountain. I call again and shut up and watch. Within minutes she is coming and quick! She passes me and stand ten yds off my right shoulder and is looking for her friend when I see two red, white and blue heads running and bobbing and to ropes swinging. The lead bird stops broadside at 30 steps and I squeeze the trigger on my little 20 gauge and he take a face full of TSS #9's and crumbles. My PA season ends at 733 pm and I let out a loud gobble with my mouth in my brother's direction only to get one back from him instantly.
His bird was 19.88 lbs, 10 1/2" beard with 1" spurs.
Mine was 18.22 lbs, 9 1/4" beard and 1 1/4" dagger like spurs.
A end to a great season !
And on this weekend we would like to say thanks to all the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice and make it possible that we all get to go out and enjoy doing the things we love in the woods and water of the the great United States of America !!!
