Well, I had 2 different lots of mink at the NAFA Auction and today was the wild mink/otter auction. Both lots were bought back which is basically saying that mink are dang near worthless these days along with raccoon.
Very sad.

Yes it is... I use to trap all the time with my daughter from the time she was born till a couple yrs ago when fox market crashed and she hot big into target archery. She is 11 now and has been asking can we trap this yr.? But with very limited time and I can't see killing a animal for $2 I really can't see doing it. Not that we ever make money trapping but the experience is where the profit comes from. The market is sad and it is sad to see 5 doz of assorted traps hang in my shed. Good for you for sticking with it !

Thanks Longbeard. I've been trapping since I was 13 years old way back in 1979. I have to admit that I haven't pushed as hard over the past couple of years due to limited time plus the price of fur has something to do with that as well. But, I can't see myself giving it up altogether.

Yet another part of our outdoors heritage slipping away. One of my old school days chums, now traps in Maine much of the winter. Haven't seen him in years, but his younger brother is at our club often shooting his bows and told me about it. Said since his brother retired from surveying, spends about two or three months up there at his cabin, on the trap line. This is the rascal that used to work his trap line on the way to school. Often showed up muddy and got sent home one morning when we were probably in junior high, for smellin' like skunk. IIRC, he had some places he'd stash the critters, pick 'em up on the way home each day? Can still remember the reactions that morning, when he entered our home room reeking of Pepi LePew and the teacher ordered him outta there.

Other than a couple box traps to get rid of a couple c'coons and 'possums around the chickens, I didn't set a single trap this past season. I expect I will run a small line this fall in retirement. I like most everything about trapping and putting up furs. This years line may be as much about vermin control as anything else.
