I am going to play with my old 340 Savage 30-30. Which bullet would be better to use ? I have loaded bot types and my kin have taken deer with them but i never seemed to have been around when they skinned them to see how the bullets did !

Well I've always been a flat nose guy but with your 340 it don't matter. You can run spitzers. But flat nose bullets have always performed for me and their my favorites.

I should mention I killed a large Moose with a 170 grain flat nose out of a 30-30. So the penetration is there.

I killed 16 deer with 170 grain flatnose 30-30 core-lokts,Marlin 336 rifle. With a bolt action I would use more aerodynamic bullets for a flatter trajectory.

With the tardy turdy, I would think that anything out to 150 yards hit in the vitals with a flatnose bullet.....is dead. And dead is dead!!

I have both types of 30-30 bullets,Round nose and Flat ones . I would never consider loading a Spitzer style bullet into a 30-30 case ! Why not ? Murphy's law prevails in my mind always . Besides i like that a 30-30 bullet is built for the velocity of a 30-30.

I caught that buck crossing a cut cornfield right at daybreak. I had my open sighted 30-30 because I was watching a brushy corner the last day of rifle. I really wasn't anticipating a field shot but that's what I got.
