Back in January we killed 4 Brant in one volley, they were all dead in the water. By the time Miss Annie retrieved the first 3 birds the 4th one had drifted away with the tide and the wind. It was far but I sent her out anyway. She spotted the Brant and off she went. I didn't start the video till she had the bird. This was the longest retrieve of her short career.

Great retrieve! Amazing dogs. I watched a long retrieve like that many years back. Friend had a black Lab male. We were hunting a water blind on the eastern shore of MD. I shot a goose but did not kill. It went down in the water about 100 yards out. Windy cold day on tidal water. Sent the dog. The goose kept swimming away from the dog with the tide and wind! Daggone goose had this dog about 200 plus yards out. The dog actually gained ground on the goose but when he got close the goose dove underwater! The dog continues to swim to the location the goose dove and disappeared under water himself! I was dumfounded. I already was concerned about the dog from the long swim. The dog and goose were underwater for at least 20-30 seconds during which time my friend and I just sat there in silent panic. I thought the dog was drowned. Nope, here he pops up with that flapping goose. Then he has to swim all the way back against wind and tide with an uncooperative goose. Must have taken him at least 8-10 minutes to swim back. Unbelievable. I ended up getting a yellow male pup from that dog.

I hope you gave her some extra treats for that!
How far do you think it was?

It's hard to judge distance over open water like that but maybe 250-300 yards.
Diezel, who is now retired to the wonderful life of being a house pet, used to dive under water for crippled ducks. Wasn't more than a few seconds but it was truly amazing when he popped up with the duck in his mouth.

Don't know what kind of dog Diezel is, but I have a friend that lives in NC. He had a side business training labs to retrieve, but he was set apart from other trainers, by training them to dive, DEEP sometimes, to retrieve.
