We went hunting at Royal United on Monday. Dave and Crawford went along. Ms. Doris hikes along, but does not shoot. She took the following photo. Score was Mugs 8 points. Guys 6 birds. Mugs wins, 8 to 6. No extra innings needed. From left: Mugs, the Mutt, Dave (every camp needs one), and Crawford. Foreground: some of the birds (Crawford left one in his truck).

Looks like a great time. Have never done a hunt like that. Some year I am gonna have to make it happen.

The most important things were that Mugs and Ms. Doris both had a great time, Gene. She loves to watch Mugs work. For a ten year old setter, he works awefully hard. He found and pointed all of the birds that Richard put out for us. The ones we killed, he retrieved. Best setter I have ever had. Now, he isn't dead broke like professional, but he suits me.

Looks like fun.I'm gonna buy some birds and go to Delps once we get some warm weather just to keep the dog and kid sharp.Jordan started off the year shooting well.We took the new pup out the saturday after deer season. It was bitter cold so Jordan dressed like the michelin man and proceeded to go 0-6.I finally took his gun and killed a bird because she was starting to get insulted after close to 10 points.I was never into stocked birds but really enjoyed seeing my kid hunt with his new pup.I imagine my archery hunting will be almost a thing of the past now. My kid wanted a GSP in the worst way and begged for one for over a year.Mom wanted no part of it but finally caved with the strict condition that the dog stays outside. It was in the house permanently the second day we had her lol. She's not a dog person at all but loves this dog and babies her constantly.I've been trying to get her to tag along just to see the dog work but she's a fair weather person.Hopefully next year she'll come to watch so she can see what it's all about. It really is amazing to see the natural instinct these dogs have.

Poor Mugs was out in the cold for longer than 30 minutes. How dare you Mutt. LOL Actually, it was closer to two hours. The only one shivering was Ms. Doris. I have to get her a warmer coat. Mugs gets out for a run or five every day. He has a warm fur coat and cold doesn't seem to bother him at all. Right now as I key this post in, he is curled up in the knee hole of my computer desk. The house is warm. Happy to do that for you, Denny. Next time we go out. She is much easier on the eyes than us guys.

I fully understand this, Doug. Ms. Doris loves Mugs and spoils him rotten. When we got him from the animal shelter, he was underweight. She made it a mission to make him gain weight so his ribs didn't show. She feeds him premium dry dog food mixed with some expensive canned dog food and even makes hamburger to add to his dinner. Over the past three years he has gained only eight pounds, but he does look better. It is fortunate that we have a king sized bed, because he takes up a lot of room. As far our dogs are concerned, every stick of furniture in the house is functional.

1-2-3-4.... Good Lord. That's a gaggle of work keeping up with, and taking care of that many mutts. I hope you have a fenced in yard ?

Wow,was he five when you got him? We got Mugs from the local animal shelter in January of 2014. He was six then. As I posted previously, he had belonged to a retired WCO who died. I don't believe he has ever been trained, at least not all that much. I could have spent a lot of time training him, but basically I am happy with the way he hunts now. He is not broke steady to wing and shot, and will chase birds that we flush, which is something bird dog experts do not want. He also covers a whole lot of ground and is not really close ranging, that is until he tires out a bit. One thing is for sure. He loves to go hunting. So do I. I guess Mugs and I were meant for each other. It has been said that a bird hunter will be blessed with one really great dog in his lifetime. Mugs is mine, and even though he is not perfect, I love him just the same as I would if he was.

That is a nice story and it's cool to give the dog a good home after his original owner died.Still, you don't get enough years with a good dog so getting one halfway through it's life would be tough for me.We work with our pup all the time but I highly doubt she's ever gonna be some sort of field trial champion and I never expected her to be one. She's a companion for my son that he can shoot birds over.So far,she fits that bill perfect and they're both having fun.Nothing else really matters. We took her out on saturday to that pheasants forever project in Elk county.I told Jordan not expect much,we were just getting the dog some much needed exercise. We never cut a pheasant track and never had a point but she listened well and had a smile on her face the entire time.It was worth it.We were pretty far back in and ran into an older guy with a wired hair pointer. He told us there were 300 birds shot over his dog this year and she didn't find any.We decided to let the two dogs play and we walked out together. It was a good day.My wife isn't much of an animal lover but when I left for work this morning, she was stretched out, sleeping on my wife, literally on top of her lol.Life is better with a good dog.

Believe me, I'm really going to miss this guy when he finally checks out, Doug. This will probably be my last English setter, as I don't want to get one and not outlive him. As to them having a shorter life span than we do, I believe that the creator of all things wild and wonderful, in his infinite wisdom, made it so in order that we humans might have many wonderful friends who give us unconditional love. Jordan is lucky to have such a dog, and also, such a dad.

Although this is the first bird dog ever had,I've had many other dogs since I was a kid.I never had a bad dog or one that didn't give me more than I was able to give them. You can't say the same thing about people. That's a good perspective you have and I never thought of it that way. We've had a small dog in the house since the kids were small. She's a good dog but she doesn't really do much.I wanted my kid to have a puppy that he could train, bond with and do just about anything he wanted with. The dog follows him everywhere, sleeps with him and goes everywhere we go.He'll only go to dog friendly stores now. When we picked her up,I told him that no person other than Mom and Dad would ever show him the kind of loyalty and unconditional affection that dog would so treat her right. It didn't take him long to realize how true that was.

For as much as a PIA the dog is at times,it's nothing compared to my wife and kids.Plus, the dog actually likes me.I'm so sick and tired of society in general,I'm ready to move to the Bob Marshall wilderness area and live like the unibomber.A good dog is all I would need.
