Working people, perfectly willing to live a modest life-style, applied for, and took state jobs for, here it goes..... THE BENEFITS. This hen't Brain Surgery folks. Yes. It's called "A pay cut." So what your saying is by freezing the current DB Plans is those who are currently in them, stay in them and for any new hires, they are not in the DB Plan. Yeah....I get that. So...going on the theory of attracting "the best and brightest" how do you now propose to do that since you have just cut the total compensation package? Hey....I'm just asking.
Dave, I get where your coming from, and your point is taken, however, I would counter with this point.
The state retirement system certainly does not guaranty we draw the best. That has been proven, be it a WCO, or anyone in the state system. The shame of it is, for the few good ones in the system, the majority of worthless ones give the few good a bad name. More money and bennies does not guaranty a better employee.

System was wrong then.......still is. Make it 401k based. You seem to think it is OK for the average taxpayer to guaranty your retirement.....when they cant even fund their own. I can't understand how you consider a plan that worked well for over 80 years, without complaints from taxpayers, to be a failure. From 2001 up to the present you do have an argument due to the fiscal irresponsibility of the Commonwealth's politicians, both R and D. BTW all taxpayers, average and otherwise, are responsible for electing the fools who decided to not make pension payments.
A: It did not work for 80 years with out complaints from tax payers
B: From 2001 to present is 15 years of absolute failure......but hey, if your retired on the state dole.....15 years of failure isn't enuff to say it's a failed system. Meanwhile, those on the state retirement can simply look next door at their neighbor who is struggling, maybe lost their job........look at the 70 year old still working at Walmart because they have to..........look at their neighbor with 35 years on the same job, working all the overtime they could get,yet are only 55 and have to work until their 62 and medi care eligible........and those state workers who never work over 40.....and retire at 25 years and full bennies.........while that same neighbor is still working OT to pay for your retirement...........yep.......you should be proud.
C: Yes, those tax payers vote......but it's time to vote for someone who stops the state handouts to their employees........

You adjust salaries to be in line with what the market dictates it should be for that particular job type in that geographical location, Duh. If a state Accountant made $50,000/yr with outstanding bennies (including pension with an early out), and that goes away, well, that same state Accountant may need to be bumped to a $75,000/yr salary. That's how competition works when vying for the "bestest and brightestest". I've had jobs where my salary was 90% Base, and 10% Bonus with the potential to exceed. Sometimes we exceeded bonus, which made it more like say, 15% bonus. Well of course, that went away over time, and it had to be made up (added) in base salary. When salaries are "in line" for job descriptions, then the potential employees make job decisions based on other things, like healthcare offerings, company trending performance, company/job stability, etc... The old Union type jobs, where you can be showered with benefits and early retirement, are mostly a thing of the past. Definitely in the private sector. The state has to "get with it".

Yes. I'll grant you that. The problem is that the "bar" is set at a given level for certain State jobs and once that bar is passed, then for some State jobs that's all an individual needs to meet in order to have a "life job." But there are other State jobs that I don't believe are so "standard". Pa. State Police starting compensation is $59,000 per year plus benefits. Starting compensation for WCO's is $39,000 per year plus benefits. (I don't know if the benefit package is comparable or not.) Now, without a lot of research, I believe the bar is a bit higher on the State Police side. But I may be guessing on that. OTOH, $20-K is a big difference in comp if I were a young man looking at a job in LE. Then again, there is always.....and I mean always the "you gotta do what you like" portion involved. I've always lectured to my 3 kids that they must choose a profession that they truly enjoy as they will likely be doing this the rest of their lives. And why do something that is miserable for most of your life? (But I did have a strict rule that no Psychology majors or Philosophy majors would be tolerated on my dime!!!) So, I mean no disrespect to any Fish or Wildlife Conservation Officers. I would have to believe the majority of these individuals got into this because of passion for the job. OTOH, I have worked "on the other side" with individuals from the State and Federal tax agencies. Some of these people are top notch and I often wondered why they were not in private practice or industry as they were so darn good they would make two to four times the money. But then, that was not the majority. These were the minority. Then there were those who had to be employed by the Gov't. as if they had to work in the private sector, they would be robbing our homes just to eat. Even in our small firm hiring individuals from larger firms didn't always work out. The majority of the time these "kids" thought that with a "pretty" smile and a nice suite that was all they needed to command a nice paycheck. Usually 6 months later they realized actual "work" was required....and required every day...and it was "hard work". Man....imagine that!!! Anyway....I'll quit babbling.

...................what up with Foxnews? ???I have seen a few folks on it poking fun at some republicans-even rince fleabus, cruz, a few others who have been falling back on the RNC's rules for nominating a candidate-even kinda poking a bit of fun at Paul Ryan. REFRESHING turn of events(surely not policy)

I watch nearly all the news stations. It's comical to see how the same stories can be covered so differently. The bias of the two worst is especially entertaining when you realize that there are people who believe either of them are "fair and balanced" rofl

When Megyn Kelly, Ainsley Earhardt, Andrea Tantaros, Molly Line, or Jamie Colby are hosting, does any blue-blooded American Male really care if it's "fair and balanced" ? Gosh, some people's priorities.
