My kids gave me a home brewing kit for my birthday. Tomorrow morn I will start making my first beer - an American IPA. Anyone else into home brewing?

Is it one of the Mr Beer kits?? If so, hope you have better luck than I did. Tried a couple different kinds/flavors, and the both tasted pretty much the same. I looked into getting a better set-up, but decided for the amount of time and work involved I could be just as happy drinking Straubs or beer from the North Country Brewery in Slippery Rock. Wouldn't mind trying my hand at it again sometime in the future when I have more time available. Seems like a fun hobby.

I don't brew my own beer, but would volunteer to help you with tasting, or whatever quality control program you might need. I can supply references. stirthepot

Did it in college. Would love to pick it back up, but I think I have enough hobbies right now...
;O)
Do keep us posted, perhaps you'll inspire me to get back into it.

Here's the deal - cooked my American IPA wort yesterday and began fermentation. The basement really smells quite nice from the citrus aroma of the hops used in the recipe. The OG of my wort came out at 1.066, exactly what the recipe called for. I placed the wort in the fermenter and added the yeast. Up 'till bed time last night there was no activity and I was starting to worry. However, when I got up at 6 am today the airlock was hopping! Also, I've been extremely aware of sanitation throughout the process. Things appear to be moving according to schedule and I should by bottling before too long. I hope to be tasting by Thanksgiving.

Cool. I was always super careful with sanitation. Treated everything like surgical tools in the OR. Only had one skunked batch in all that we made.

One week update - fermentation is still underway. The air lock is still burping about every 45-50 seconds.

In college my room mate and I made several 5 gallon batches of bath tub brew. Made a few batches of home made rootbeer over the years too. The Beer never blew up on me, but the rootbeer sure did.
I have a recipe for apple beer made from dried roasted apple peels, but never tried it.
If you start drinking the beer a little too early, the price is paid in excessive greenhouse gas emissions. Best consumed on a warm day when windows are open.

My kids gave me a home brewing kit for my birthday. Tomorrow morn I will start making my first beer - an American IPA. Anyone else into home brewing? I home brew my own ales. I've kind of settled in to 3 different types of IPA's that I brew on a regular basis. One, I just bottled 2 cases of a 90 minute IPA that tastes similar to the Dogfish 90 Minute IPA. If you like a an an that is a tad sweet and ultra hopped up, this is one for you. The second is a Belgian Abbey Ale, it tasts a lot like Chimay Red. It's delicious! The third is an Austrailian Summer Ale that my friends and family all seem to love. I've got 5 gallons of the Belgian Abbey fermenting, it will be ready for bottling in 3 weeks and ready to drink in 7 weeks. I have 5 gallons of the Austrailian Summer fermenting as well, it will be bottled this weekend and ready to drink in 2 weeks. I call my home brew operation "Stickbow Brewing.". For some reason I can't post a picture of my bottle labels, you guys would love it if you saw it.

Reminds me of my Dad and Uncle brewing beer once. I was just a kid. But I remember they spent all day and finally had all the beer bottled and stored in the basement of my Uncles house. Back then, his basement was pretty much an old time fruit cellar with a dirt floor. Anyhow, by the evening both Dad and his Brother were pretty well toasted. I was just hanging out listening to the hunting stories when I started to hear some popping noises from the cellar. I went to investigate and found the caps or corks (I don't remember which) were blowing off those bottles and beer was dripping off the low ceiling.. It was like the fourth of July with exploding beer bottles providing the "bottle rockets"! I finally got my Dad and Uncle to the cellar and I always remember my Uncle trying to catch the beer dripping off the ceiling.. They were both old time steel workers and liked their beer..

Week two update - fermenting is finished. I hope to bottle this weekend or early next week. GPS coordinates for taste testing are up for auction as I went to Cabelas Monday and have a long "wish list" of "must have" items.

Need to get out hunting so this will be quick - tested beer Sat. and it had a FG of 1.019 giving it an ABV of about 6.1%. Bottled two cases Sun morn and beer will now condition for at least three weeks before consumption begins.

I know this is an old thread but I'm curious Blue; What was the verdict on your first attempt? I've always wanted to try my hand at being a brew meister but never got around to it.

Maub, Sorry I've been so slow to update this thread. It's been an extremely busy hunting/holiday/ice fishing season. The beer was very, very good. I am down to the last few bottles and have been holding onto them to give to Mutt when he delivers the deer bologna.

Don't remember volunteering to bring bologna (of course that may be due to CRS syndrome), but when Dave picks me up it will be included with the pretzels he is bringing.

My first brew was such a hit with the family that I was encouraged, with a gift certificate for Christmas, to continue with the hobby. This morning, I made a trip east to the homebrew store in Bethlehem. As the weather this weekend won't be conducive to ice fishing, I will be brewing three additional malted adult beverages; a Czech Pilsner, a Maibock and a Nut Brown Ale. Report to follow.

2 cases of Nut Brown Ale bottled on Saturday and conditioning for at least two weeks before consumption begins. The Czech Pilsner and the Maibock were racked Friday into 5 gallon secondary fermenters (glass carboys w air locks) and will be ready to bottle in 2-3 weeks.

I've been brewing up a storm this winter. I've got 4 cases of a continuously hopped 90 Minute IPA; 2 case of Irish Stout; 2 cases of Milk Stout; 4 cases of Australian Summer Ale. I've got my own creation in the fermenter as of this past Monday night, I call it Pizzelle Stout. It's a Milk Stout that has lots of body to it. When I transfer it to the secondary fermenter, I'll add the vanilla bean tincture and the star anise tincture. If you've ever had Italian Pizzelles, that"s what the finished product tastes like. My wife & I have also been making our wines as well. I'm going to have to start kegging.
We're gearing up for the summer season.
