Let it go man, let it go. horse2 Ballistics and performance thereof, can be argued til the cows come home. Just like x-bows, who's x is best.......

Dang, Stroupy must have let loose on the silent dog whistle with a 90 psi blast to summon the rest of the tinfoil hat brigade to try a "daring" rescue of his hurt feelings. Love it that a few of you think that ballistic tips are a controlled expansion premium bullet. It's become clear that I'm talking out over so many of your heads so I'll put it in terms even the rest of you can understand. Shoot behind the shoulder with Core-Lokts all you like. You succeed in putting the bear into 4 wheel drive and even if he's dead in 30 seconds that gives him 30 seconds to run past me so I can break him down and tag him, or it gives him 30 seconds to run down into the ugliest stuff he can find so as to teach you guys a lesson your daddy's should have. Or you can shoot for the shoulder like you should. In order to break both shoulders reliably you will need a quality controlled expansion bullet (no this does not mean a ballistic tip). You will then break the bear down where he stands and save yourselves a lot of trouble and you won't have to worry about your bear wearing someone elses tag. Hint. And stroupy this ones just for you sweetie. Velocity itself doesn't kill anything. But it sure is hell on weak bullets. And yes, Ballistic tips qualify under the heading of weak bullets. If you're shooting weak bullets such as Core-Lokts, BT's, SST's or their ilk, you need to stay the hell out of the shoulder bone and shoot for the lungs. Thereby kicking your bear into 4 wheel drive so he can run past someone else before dying. But stroupy's dads bear only ran 40 yards after a double lunger from a 35 Remmy. So as far as stroupy knows, everybody elses bear only runs 40 yards after a double lunger too. But somebody that "knows" as much as him needs to shut up, take notes, and start applying same. Thank me later. Correct, behind the shoulder you'll lose a lot more, cause its also less likely to hit vitals, but if your telling me a 250gr .35 Core lock isnt gonna break both shoulders, than you better go read whatever ballistic articles your getting your information from. Heck a 180 30-06 will do it. And if you think a bear on a 30 second run will teach me anything about thick, than I wanna hunt where you do cause it must be candy land!

Remingtons 35 Whelen 250 grain load is Not a Core-Lokt but a standard cup and core. Core-Lokt 's have an inner belt that sometimes manages to keep the two together after impact. The bullet is effective because it leaves the muzzle of a Whelen at about 2,300. The 180 Core-Lokt does penetrate, but most PA hunters use 150's. If I hunted "candyland" I'd still be waiting to have a bear story to tell. And wherever the bear is when you shoot him is likely better than where he'll go in a 30 second death run.

If we're talking about a 35 whelen,I agree it will or at least can bust both shoulders on a bear.If we're talking 35 rem,no way now how will it pentrate both shoulder bones of an adult bear.I'm assuming since you said 250 gr,we're talking about 35 whelens.A 35 whelen is one of the best bear cartridges out there and you certainly wouldn't need a premium bullet at that weight and velocity.
Light, fragile bullets at high velocities are a poor choice for bear and I know that from personal experience unfortunately.

Not all Remington green box offerings are Core-Lokt 's. Most folks don't realize it but just off the top of my head the .222 50 grain, .35 Whelen 250, 45-70 300 & 405 grain loads are not Core-Lokt 's. The 125 grain 30-06 is not a Core-Lokt either.

It's funny how you bash core lokts but every time I shoot a deer with them they drop. Behind the shoulder and all. I guess my old man should thank his lucky stars the bear didn't run off to someone else oh yeah it dropped before the next driver could shoot lol. Guess he needs to sale the thing since it is under gunned for the Kevlar armored animals roaming PA. It's funny you want to be Mr reloading when my uncle is probable the biggest gun collector and re loader there is. He reloads 35's for my dad all the time and never once said about it being not good enough. confused-smiley-013 You double lung something it's not going very far don't care what animal it is. What does speed do for most of PA when you can only see under 200 yds in most places?

Stroupy, I could explain it to you, but you'd never get it anyway. So what would be the point?

Was not aware a 250 wasn't a true core lock, is a 200 in .35 or a 220 for .30? While back I loaded nosler ballistic tipped in .358 225 gr for a buddy, and not real hot either, after 1 bear and 2 deer in the ribs he gave them up, blew too much meat up, in the ribs behind the shoulder still made a lot of shoulder bloodshot! I hope no one take personal offense to anything, I just see we were on a roll and was having fun!!!! I've shot and seen a lot of bears taken. I honestly can say most were with corelocks or winchesters equivalent. Probably 7-8 of our gang carry a 35 Whelen, .358 Winchester, mainly pumps, a few levers. The rest goes from 7mm-08 to 45-70. Four one family) carries 300 mags with winchesters ballistic tips I believe, silver casing with black bullet? the older crew no longer of this earth, had one man who was a bear magnet in the late 70's early 80's. He used a 44/40 and took one in 77-78 than they shut it down for 2years? And took his third consecutive in81? Dates might be wrong, that was when you were allowed one bear per gang! I'm not sure of his load, but one was a one shot deal, the other two were multiple hits making it a ways. Now I won't tell you how many deer we chased wounded by him with that 44!

Hunters as a group have to be the most misinformed group of people in the world, Remington cartridges and core -loc bullets are the Yugo of the firearms industry, most hunters grab what ever is cheap and available because they are to lazy and tight to shoot enough to fully understand ballistics and their rifle, and besides who cares how good a bullet is we can shoot the deer as many times as need be, as far as bears go a few guys bumble into one once in a life time, if they happen to kill it "their bullet is the best" if not well they must of missed it. confused-smiley-013

We were having fun. The .35 200 grainers are indeed Core-Lokt 's. So are the .30 220 grainers.Whether it be the round nose .35 Rem or the spitzer .35 Whelen/.350 Rem. mag offerings. They are Core-Lokt 's. They all work too. Mostly because .35's (other than the .35 Rem) operate at a nice velocity for woods hunting. Which is pretty much what black bear hunting is all about. A serious bear hunter can do no better for himself than a cartridge (other than stuff like .35 Rems and .44-40's) in the .35-.45 caliber range and top it off for whatever you like. Even a .350 Rem. mag can't obliterate a Core-Lokt, I've tried. My admonishment to avoid Core-Lokt 's for shoulder shots pertains to cartridges .30-06 and below, which are what most folks use. With that said, even some of them are half decent. I've put .30-06 220 grain Core-Lokt 's through a moose broadside. I know of another guy who did the same thing with a .270 and a 150 Core-Lokt.

my dad's bear and what blackbruin has been telling you is the opposite that you are telling everyone. The bear that my camp shot this year took three shots to kill because the guy gut shot it then spined it the last wad to fin ish it guess it was the cheap bullets from walmart and not shot placement? funny my dad put his behind the shoulder and dropped over att 40 yds but the one with bad shooting got to the next driver.

No reloading required to get the right answer for bear.

I'm glad to see you consider the 30-06 the right answer for bears, and not the 270. LOL

Honestly I think nosler partitions waste too much meat! You forgot 1 advantage of everybody using Corlocks, somebody always has ammo if you run out!!!! I haven't carried a center fire since my 9th bear in 08, now it's time for a flintlock. They all think I'm nuts but hey they all thought I was nuts before! One time a guy brought his twin 12 yr old sons with .243's after the one kid shot at 20 yards and no blood but 1 drop , I looked at his ammo, his dad had varmint loads for them! You gotta be kidding me! So he took my 35, and the other my backup .358, and I just carried a walking stick, had tagged 2nd drive anyway. But it shows you how little people know, I mean come on! Kid gets his first shot at a mature boar 65 minutes into his bear hunting career and he's got 55gr varmint ammo!

A number of you guys have tried to insinuate that I said Core-Lokt 's won't kill deer. I'm not going to let yinz get away with that though. Beings that I have killed the big three in Pa with Core-Lokt 's and have killed Moose with them to boot!
