I have been pondering this post since it first appeared.. it really is hard to pick a favorite. I have always liked the look and feel of Ruger Model 77s. I also have fallen in love with the smooth, clean lines of the old Savage Model 99s. And then who could ignore a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in Super Grade? For sheer enjoyment stalking deer in the mountains of PA, the old Marlin 336 in what else? .30-30 with a Williams 5D Peep Sight. I guess my favorite caliber has to be .270. Probably because I don't have a .257 Weatherby magnum.. Come on Glenn, don't encourage Mike!!!!!

If you have a .270 you don't need a .257 anything. Those .25's suffer from poor BC's and a .270 with a heavy Berger VLD will be passing it downrange. The .257 Roy is flatter out to 400 yards but if you can't make a 400 yard shot with a .270 Win. then the Weatherby round isn't going to fix the problem. Not to even mention a heavy .277 bullet is bringing a whole lot more thump to the party at long range than a .257" 120 grain will. Mike, Mike, Mike.... If yer gonna go the 270 route, then ya may as well step it up a tad and get the best all round cartridge, the 30-06

What's everyone's thoughts on the new .26 Nosler? We've got a whole thread on it. If you want my take it's just another answer to a question no one was asking.

It's the total package or at least as close as any combination of brass, powder, primer, and bullet can come. I think the .270 is a lot more fun to shoot off the bench though. Other cartridges are even more recoil friendly but I think you start to lose too much in terms of "thump" below 270. Most 6.5's do fine however (I don't want all you 6.5 guys on my back, there are a disproportionate number of you on here).

Funny thing is if you asked me the last time I ran into a guy while afield using one of the 6.5 variations, I'd scratch my head and say I don't know? confused-smiley-013 I know I must've run into somebody with at least a Swede in the woods once or twice but I can't recall.

You get no bashing from me. Shoot whatever makes ya feel good. They all kill deer.
I just happen to like the rifle my 260 is in and the cartridge is enough for deer, for me.

I like the .260 a TON more than I like the .243

There is an edge there, for sure and that is one reason I went with the 260 years ago. I like a tad heavier bullet, for piece of mind, for some reason.

Never had an urge to own a 270, although I have shot those belonging to friends.
The M700 in 25-06 (bought used in the 70s) was my first bolt action deer rifle and it spoiled me for everything else. It was also my first scoped deer rifle.
At the time it was a "step up" from the ancient M94 in 32 Spl. that I'd started out with. Although I'd killed a few deer with the M94, it was mostly a short range deal and I wanted something with a bit more "reach".
I later built a heavy barreled 25-06 on a Mauser action for long range 'chucks and deer. 24" SS Douglass, .750 at the muzzle. That's the rifle I've taken deer with out to 500 yards and many at closer ranges. Most taken were over 300 yards using the bipod, although I've also killed a few offhand with it.
Lots of 'chucks taken with it, were good practice for when I started killing deer with that rifle. I've also killed deer with the M700 out to 200 yards. Also once had a Ruger M77 in 25-06, but pawned that'n off on a stepson.
These days I prefer hunting baldies with some of my older rifles and iron sights. Currently, that's a 50s vintage M64 Win. (24" bbl) in 30-30 w/Lyman receiver sight.
I've killed multiple deer with about a dozen different cartridge/firearms combinations over the years: 44 mag (S&W M629), 8x57 (two rifles), 30-06 (3 different rifles), 25-06 (two rifles), 444 Marlin, 22-250, 32 Spl and a Marlin 35 Rem. Variety is the spice of life.

If I could only have one of my rifles it would be my 6.5 Creedmoor!!!!! If I could go tomorrow and pick a new rifle it would be a 1-8 or 10 Swift 24" barrel to shoot heavy .224 bullets and smack a deer with it for sure. I've got an eye for a Savage mod.25 thumb hole stock in .223 lately a dedicated coyote rifle clip and a good solid receiver, oh well a guy can dream!!!!

I want that 26 Nosler, just to get Mike going. You'd probably be able to use it too. I recall you saying you killed a deer at 700 yards or some ridiculous distance before.

Same here...only go there for their fine food inasmuch in the Hillsgrove area there is NO restaurants(other than bars) outside of the Forksville Store but then you gotta put up with Big Mike catering to the Yuppies crowd !! lol

It's areal tough place to dine out. I usually either go to Montoursville, or to the Jolley Trolley in Dushore, or to my favorite; The Brass Pelican in Elk Grove. None are close. Years ago there was a nice little pizza shop in Estella, I miss that.
