We went to The Penguin tonight. Great steaks and wings. Morels would have been the icing on the cake.

Anyone have a guess for a date? I've been at this game for some decades now. Knowing when "the time" is right for them, has me not wasting precious time in the woods too early....... though no time in the woods can really be viewed as wasted. But, priorities such as, getting wood split, ramping up equipment maintenance, etc... are reserved for the transitional period between winter/spring. I never had the urge to go in late March or early-on April. Last year though, with the weird weather, I had a strange feeling, and I took a peek at my VERY EARLY south-facing sloped site that ALWAYS produces the firsts. It was March 26, and I found 8. 6 greys, and 2 very bright yellows. It's the earliest spot by WEEKS that I find yellows, year after year. My earlies finds of Morel's prior to that was April 12..... but like I said, that could be much a product of me not having the urge to look any sooner too.

That April 12 year was bumper. I found 14 pounds that year I agree, April of '12 was great for me also. But I meant my earliest find for a Morel prior to last March.... was on April 12th, of some year.

April 1. Time is drawing near. If we get some consistent warmth, it may not be as late as I was suspecting. The key is the ground temps, and moisture. But I think we will do fine on the moisture part. Hoping we don't get the early oppressive heat and wind though... prolly the worst combo you can have.

I know the winter was long, but it's pert near that time to get out lookin, especially after the little warm stretch we had. Seeins how dead this thread is, I'd suspect nobody (including me) has been out yet ?

Sure the cold weather coming back isn't going to help them. I see the trees are getting ready to bloom after the warm up.

Brief spats of cold weather like this, is the norm in April. Doesn't affect Morels in the least, with the exception of a slight delay. It's all about the soil temps and moisture. I've gathered Morels in near white-out snow. April snow happens every year. What DOES affect Morels that have popped, is the hard frosts that seem to occur even into May. That's when you find them with the burnt/brown tops. THAT happens every year also. I lost a field of Buckwkheat to frost May 15th or so, about 10 years ago ?

I don't know what I am looking for. So I don't bother. If I stumble on some I might pick them up to try but I don't think I ever saw any that I can remember.

I haven't been out, but from what I'm hearing, the season is quite late as I really expected. I agree though, April 24, something is up right now. Certainly wouldn't expect any "flushes", but at least some blacks and greys are out there.

How would you make this mushroom? On a steak?

I saute' them in butter and minced garlic. I allow them to cool and put them into freezer bags, about an inch deep; getting rid of additional air by rolling the bag. I put the smaller bags into a larger bag, and if you have enough, they CAN last you all year.

I dehydrate them down to the consistency of a potato chip. They last for years. I store them in mason jars. You just soak in hot water to reconstitute. They taste just as fresh as the day you picked them. You still have to cook them before eating though. The soak water makes for great mushroom soup.

We walked into about 2 dozen morels while changing locations turkey hunting. All were about 2 1/2" or 3" high. Just about enough to make a mess for two people.
