Taking 4 year old grandson up to Harrisburg's Bass Pro Shop store to buy him his very first fishing outfit!! Looking for something a tad lighter than my average saltwater outfits but more than the typical Mickey Mouse ones to be used both FW & SW. Never been there but hear there's a lot of neat stuff to see.

Way cool Loggy!!! Memories that will last a lifetime for the grandchild!! I still remember fishing with my grandparents at the Pymatuning reservoir. At times from the shore but mostly in their boat. So many memories and so many stories!! I'm 64 and I still recall it like it was yesterday. Fishing off a dock with a bamboo pole and string. I caught a ton of bluegill and bass from that setup.

Had a really fun day today at Harrisburg's Bass Pro Shop helping 4 year old Grandson pick out his own very first fishing rod!! Ended up with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 Youth Spincast Combo. Came with a USC26 Shakespeare spincast reel matched to at 5'6" rod medium action rod rated 6-12lb line which should work for starting out for some freshwater trout, panfish etc plus intro to some saltwater fun this summer. He really picked-up fast on the simple spincast push button features. He's already a 2 year crabbing veteran but now will soon be entering the wonderful angling sport with Pap!! We had to drag him out of Bass Pro Shop which is a good sign he's learning well from Pap!!

Yeah Dave,,,,,he has ole Loggy pretty much hooked!! I'm gonna take him to one of those trout farms/hatchery type places in a few weeks for a lil outing. Had both my girls there several times when they were young and had a blast!! I will be sure to tell my Grandson that it's certainly not representative of the real world though!! He's been crabbing with me since he turned 2 but that's pretty much non-stop action which is a lil different than fishing. Just turning 4 he seems to already have a love for the outdoors. Had him to Nixon Park Nature Center last week & had to drag him out of there.

I remember our first grandsons 1st trout fishing trip. The women went shopping and SIL and I took him to the stream. We got home first. My wife came into the bathroom to find him in a muddy bathtub. She asked about his experience. He said"I peed on a tree and felled in the mud and Oh yeah,I caught a fish".

Used to take the kidos to a trout farm just outside of New Holland but don't think they're still in business. Thinking of taking grandson to Limestone Springs Trout Preserve(link below). Appreciate any input if anyone was ever there. Limestone Springs Trout Preserve

LOL Each year my gun club has a trout derby in May. HUGE fish in a small pond. Elbow to elbow kids. We got the trout paste for my grand nieces. Unreal how quick they caught their limits

Getting a kid into fishing is a great gift to him. You're a good grandpa and the boy is lucky to have somebody get him into something that is true adventure, not something from an electronic device.

My grandson's mom(my daughter) & dad both work full time which works out great for a retired pap who just loves getting involved with the kidos!! Some days I'm more tired vs when I worked!! lol

I really miss the days when my walks in the woods were accompanied by my three sons when they were small. Seining minnows was one of their favorite things. The had lots of different minnows and aquatic insects in the aquariums. We once had a caddis hatch in the house and they lined the inside of one of our lampshades. Luckily for us my wife got used to stuff like that happening and liked seeing the boys into such stuff...............Man, I miss those days. Maybe you're even luckier than your grandson Loggy

Amen Red.....I feel so blessed to have the chance to be involved. Years ago never dreamed about being an old Pap at 68 years old with grandkids but here I am!! Red...with your kidos... I sure hope the Good Lord will see the same family expansion in his plan for you. Every Sunday we take the grandson to our church's Sunday school as the parents most times currently are sorta anchored at home with twin baby girls but I see us all getting on the Sunday schedule down the trail. It's a new & exciting dimension life which I just can't be thankful enough for.

I bought my sons a set up with Zebco 33 and an Ugly Stick rod when they were two or three. They all used theirs until they were 9 or 10 and switched to spinning rods. Those old combos are still working today without any of the rods breaking. They were even loaned out to a class of special needs students to use on their annual spring fishing trips for several years. They have to be near bullet proof.
Fishing, even if much of the time is just spent exploring the stream bank or turning over rocks, is a great way to spend warm spring and summer days for everybody.

My grandtwins love to go fishing. Last Sunday, my son, his wife and older twin boys, took them down to a Buddy's farm pond. I called my buddy and he came out and we sat and watched everyone fish. I wish I had a picture to share of the smallmouth young Noah caught. Little Emersyn just sat fishing the upper end of the pond just singing her heart out. I told my Buddy that this is what it's all about now in my life.

I loved my Zebco's back in my youth. My favorite was an 808 that I used for catfish on Back Channel of Ohio River at Neville Island.

Never had an 808 Bushy but heard they're pretty durable reels to handle larger fish. I have an old Zebco 733 "Saltwater" edition that I throw in the boat sometimes for a back-up. Just cleaned it up yesterday & still operational even witha few whiskers on it. Last 10 years or so I pretty much went to using levelwinding baitcasters Penn 965 and a Shimano Calcutta CT400. They're built like tanks and normally outlive the fisherman if you properly service them. Great for harsh saltwater conditions & drifting for flounder!
