You got that right, and a bad hit results in either a lost/wasted deer or a really long tracking job to finish it off. This was the mid 70s. I think he was using core locts, blew up on the shoulder. Thin skinned bullets, I figured

Own .257 Roberts, .270Win and 30-06. Have kill deer with of em. But if I had to pick one, Jack O'Connor's favorite hands down. JM I usually hunt with one too-Rem 700BDL. I read his(O'conner)stuff a lot as a teenager and thought that caliber was what any deer hunter would want. I like it, but sometimes carry an old 30-30 and once in a while a single sot 243. I never lost a deer because of the caliber i was using.

I might try to take a doe with my 22/250 this year. I know it is only a 22 caliber but many deer fall to 22 cals every year. Shot placement and bullet selection are key.

I know a guy who has only ever hunted with a .222. It would not be my choice but that old guy has killed a whole lot of deer with his.

I think I'll take the Model 70 .243 Saturday. The new cuttings offers 300 yard shots from the high spot.

I used to go through rifle's like Bill Clinton went through underage girls. For some reason,I always kept coming back to the boring .308.Everything about it is mundane but it never lets me down. The day after my son was born,I picked him up a Kimber Montana in .308.I had to break it in for him and used it for 8 years. When he was big enough to use it,I went one year without it and had to run out and buy another one.

I bought my son a Kimber Montana in .223.I put the same scope on it as his .308,adjusted the trigger to the exact same pull and loaded him 600 rounds that winter so he could just bang away offhand at gongs. The next fall he wanted to try and kill a deer with it so I loaded some 55gr ttsx for it.I think between the two of us.we've killed 4 or 5 deer with that load and none have taken a step.Sometimes you have to search for an entrance and exit wound but they do exit.I liked that gun so much that I had to buy myself one as well.

I bet that is a sweet rifle to carry and shoot! My 22/250 is a single shot TC Encore platform.

It is.I brought his .223 to shoot on the way to work today. That .223 will shoot 3 40gr v-max into a ragged hole at 100 yards. The pencil thin barrel heats up fast but for a walking varmint rifle, you can't beat it.

Hard to beat the 35 Remington for woods hunting.

I killed quite a few with a model 94 30-30 before I got a .270. I carried the 94 yesterday when I took a long walk. I still really like that little gun.

Love mine for a still hunt in the thick stuff, it's a pre 64,32 special with a williams peep. I would hunt with iy more if my eyes were still young.

Your knowledge of the cartridge is obsolete. 200 grain round noses were never the answer to anything.
