Herd shooting during antlerless season leaves more wounded and dead deer in the woods than all the other seasons combined.... Semi autos will correct this, I'm sure. smileys-whistling-823718

The problem is a lot of these guys only come out to hunt for a few days. They don't shoot on a regular basis and most of them you don't see all year until rifle season. Most of the hard core hunters at my club shoot just about every weekend. They will wound one from time to time, it happens, but for the most part they are pretty proficient. Yep. Many that hunt just rifle only schedule a few days to do it. When the time comes, there is some urgency to get it done and the likelihood of a poor shot choice or poor shot placement is somewhat higher. If they wait on a better opportunity, as many that archery hunt do, not getting a deer is likely. Sorry, the same guys that rush shots in rifle, do the same in archery. I hear the stories, and the same guys that take chancy shots do so in ANY season.

The average archer that hunts 10-15 days a season and practices as Bushy mentioned is much more selective of their shots than the average rifle hunter that hunts 2 days. Bad shots happen in both but there is no denying that there is more "urgency" with filling a tag with the weekend warrior rifle hunter.

And good shots who don't understand that even light brush can send a bullet well off the mark and turn a shot through the shoulder into a gut shot.

I know unethical archers that are also unethical rifle hunters. Season or length of season does not determine ethics.

I know unethical archers that are also unethical rifle hunters. Season or length of season does not determine ethics. Certainly. As do I. That was not the point, though, that Bushy or myself were elaborating on. Neither of us said all or none. We both said a lot and many. There is no denying that there is a distinct difference between the average archery hunter that hunts upwards of 10-15 days a season and practices often compared to the average weekend warrior rifle hunter that might hunt 2 days and practices little. That was the point in case you missed it.

I will throw this out there, but I think hunters as a whole group make more ethical shots and wound less now than 20 years ago.

What I take from that is..... WHERE THE $%^& IS YOUR CLUB ? In my "club" (read, my land), 8-9 guys hunted most of the first week of rifle all day most days. Zero buck sighted. That includes the non-legal variety. You guys knocked down 13 archery thru rifle. Can we swap clubs ?

I see rifle misses much more than bow misses. It's been that way since I've lived in the hunting woods. Rifle hunters, (some), are quick to shoot through brush, long distances and at moving game. Archers know their quarry has to be still and in range, most that I know are archers because they are patient ....... some are not. I missed a doe this year with the rifle and killed a buck with a bow. Still don't know how the miss happened and I swore I hit her but my tenant and I looked for hair or blood or sod blown apart for 3 hours...... a mystery. It was a "longer than I thought" shot by about 55 yards.......I never would make such significant misjudgment with a bow.

IMO, When a hunter believes deer hunting is a competition between himself and other hunters, ethics go out the window. and it doesn't matter what they hunt with. Every one of you knows the type I'm talking about.

Lots of guys look at hunting as a competition. If I looked at it that way, I would have lost interest many years ago. I hunt because I love hunting. I usually pass several legal bucks during archery season. I don't pass the shots because I'm waiting for a monster, I do it because I don't want to use my tag and end my hunting time. There was a season, many years ago, when I killed an 8 point that was my second biggest to that date on the first evening. A couple years after that, I shot another about the same size on the first Monday. Those were probably two of my least enjoyable seasons-including years that I didn't even draw on a buck. My most memorable seasons have been when I killed a buck on one of the last couple days of the season, including one when I shot, what my 5 year old son(at the time) described as "the smallest 8point there could ever be in the whole world" on the last Friday. Hunting has nothing to do with competition for me

Hunting has nothing to do with competition for me I might have missed your answer to Cspot's question. Here it is again. It has nothing to do with competition. That the furthest thing from what it is all about. Then why do you care how others hunt?

I Don't care how others hunt. I DO care that somebody wants to change archery season so that a few slackers can get advantages that were allowed for the handicapped. Or, just as bad, some want to use a cause for self-promotion like some kind of hero for the down trodden hunter. If a fight for change was to be started, it should have been to return it to the recurve and long bows that many of us started with..... All in My humble opinion, of course.

The group you associate with rolled over and embraced equipment and technology changes with open arms to make your hunts easier instead of fighting against them. Now that you got your easy pass, you want to slight and belittle others than want a different easy pass. It is too funny listening to the justifications for why you are special and others are not.

Because they got it right and then went too far trying to make it everything to everybody.......that's basic why. Again, in My humble opinion.

Compound certainly made things easier. I never even saw one 'til I had hunted a season with a recurve. I hunted a couple more with it before My parents got Me a 50# pull Indian compound with a continuous plastic covered steel cable-a life time string-. The bow I shoot now is much advanced over that one. It's a 2000 or 2001 hoyt that I bought from a nephew for 125 dollars in 2003 or 04. He has had at least 3 compounds since then and now uses a crossbow-not on any of my land now though
