I have never had a season where I have seen more deer and have had less opportunity to shoot one like this year. Yesterday I finally laid down a big fat adult doe after seeing around 50 deer perhaps more, it is hard to count when they are running flat out. In 3 days hunting, I saw over 100 deer, 5 different buck, three legal to take. The only deer that walked by me were a couple of doe of the year that I did not take. I had my grandson outfor his first hunt yesterday. He was a trooper. He was cold and shivering and stuck it out. I took him in to warm up and for lunch, then back on the stand. That boy got to see more deer in one day than I saw in my first 5 years of hunting combined. Since the deer were running flat out through the trees it was not a situation for hm to shoot in his first year but he got excited to see them. At 2:50 pm three doe were coming towards us doing that real fast walk they do when they are in a hurry but not alarmed, I figured They would be my last chance for the day because I had to get my grandson home. I picked out an opening about 8 feet and when the big doe came into it I swung behind her shoulder and went with her and squeezed the trigger. Caught he in the crease behind the shoulder, she went about 10 yards and piled up. First deer with my new 45-70, took off the top of the heart and there were no pieces of lungs bigger than an orange. Thos leverevolution round work well.

My sore shoulder started to twitch at the mention of 45-70, but congrats on the doe and "breaking-in" a new rifle. Figured to blood the "new" M64 Win. in 30-30 this year, but didn't have it along when does were still wandering by like they were in little peril. Once I decided to tote it, all the deer were at least 300 yards away. Season got kinda weird for some near camp on the last Saturday, as others said they were suddenly seeing deer in groups of 6 or more. I saw 8 across the valley that day and one farmer thumped a buck that morning, that was tagging along behind 15 doe. Nothing much surprises me, after 50+ seasons. I take whatever comes up.

Didn't know where else to put this. It's my best mountain buck to date. You shoulda seen the one I m-m-m-m-issed. Same drainage. Some of you know..I worked really hard..with a BUNCH of wonderful people...to see that an opportunity to just see one of these guys...came a lot more frequently...to a lot more folks...right here in PA. We have now the kind of whitetail hunting I always imagined was possible in PA...and you can find about any kind of hunting YOU want..almost anywhere in the State. We are very, very fortunate people. We have a LOT to be thankful for.

If that is in Centre Co, I had one like it on trail cam. Very nice. I got one of that caliber last year in farm country. Still trying for my big old heavy mountain buck.

Ed, congratulation on a truly fine example of a Pennsylvania whitetail buck. "Age" is the bar for me and he certainly has achieved some age. A dandy heavy set of antlers and I know he is earned and well deserved.
A shout of congratulations to John also. I suppose it'll be a doe for me in the late season and that's fine if it means "the big buck" will be in my sights next year. Saw him several times this year -- on Sundays, after dark and/or in between seasons.

Funny..,in a very, very fine way...but..I'm pretty sure I know the most of you who post here:) And for the greater part...I've come to the conclusion..if I don't...I'd like to:) Those of you I know for certain..I'd like to say thank you; getting to know each of you has very definitely contributed to my 'maturation' as an outdoorsman, and ultimately, my enjoyment of every facet of the outdoors. Life doesn't get much better than that, folks:)
Some of ya know, I got a new knee early June. Done plumb wore the other one out. This was, and still is a season of huge reflection..and introspection for me. My new bio knee performed beautifully. I got up to about eight miles a day on those ridges, down from ten or twelve just a short few ago;) Felt pretty good about that. But the writing is on the wall as they say.... I shot this very example of the full potential of age and wise management;)...at 8:20 in the morning. I got him on the tailgate at 7:30 pm:)
I got actually got tears in my eyes a couple times as I was putting on gentle, persuasive coaxes...that the deer do whatever it is they do...and then, now...just BAIL to the next ridge...where, hopefully Glenn or Jim or Frank were sitting on the best bail routes I could think of. The tears were because...a couple of those vertical ravines...with boulders the size of small house...AND laurel...AND scrub oak.....
I realized half way through 'em... could well be the last time I see that particular piece of spectacular real estate. Going up, fer now..is just fine and dandy. Can climb like a goat, with the lungs of a snappin' turtle:) Sidehill/vertical/down mountain...well...that's another story.......
...and if ya'll wish to keep this waxing philosophical thing going..I've got a few more poignant photos..and few more treasured re-collections.
And John, I'll get to my PMs soon:) And ...after the butchering...I would trade the dark bounty of my buck, AND throw in the antlers.. trusting you'd keep the antlers and the story in good company...for the hide and carcass of your fat doe...tomorrow:) Part of my inflection is deciding that if I ever shoot another buck of this stature..it will be in October, with the longbow, at ten yards...when there is actually an ounce of fat left on him somewhere.....
Life is Good....Nice to share it with ya'll.....Happy Holidays!!!

Nothing is better table fare than an old doe . Nothing is worse to eat than an old buck. Now, I only have 4 or 5 truely "big" bucks on my resume. But, every one has been terrible eating. Dry and tough. The bucks do look better on the wall, for sure!

Not a bad result fer an old bird with some gimps left in him? Nice buck, E Dubyer.
As for big does vs small ones, I'll take a small one. Easier to fetch, tastier and more tender on the table and I've killed a fair number of each variety.

Congrats JohnS and Ed. Love those old mountain bucks! Here is one from Elk county, 1966. Aged at 5.5. Taken on the backside of the mountain in the nastiest laurel and rock there is! Killed him at noon. Did not get out until 7 pm! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using proboards
