Well the Nikon Monarch 5 8x42's arrived today and they look good. Should make him a good gift as long as they hold up over the long haul as he's one to really "test" his equipment. A lot of good info here; thanks all.

I've always felt Nikon's were clearer than Leupold's. Yep and many others we well, when comparing similar price points. Don't get me wrong, Leupold does have great glass in their lineup, but it is at their high end.

Natchez has camo Nikon Monarch 10x42s for $190 at the moment and a bunch of Nikon rifle scopes also "on sale".

I had a Nikon buckmaster scope on a .308 and a Leupold vx2 on a 300 wsm.I was looking through both scope one day out of my garage. When I looked through the leupold,I instantly saw a small swarm of gnats on the other side of my yard that I couldn't see with the Nikon.I never thought there was a practical difference until that day.

You need to compare a Nikon Monarch to a Leupold VX2.
