If we had better walleye lakes in the state-other than Lake Erie- I'd not only buy my license every year, I'd buy a boat.

The streams are high and muddy around here for the youth opener. Bummed out for them.

Based on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, it may be a washout for the regular opener in this end of the state as well.

One thing I've noticed, amongst others weather-wise. It is ALWAYS windy now. Seems most days are windy. When you walk every day, you notice.

Going to take a walk tonight after work and check out the stream I plan to fish on the opener to see if my usual spot is good to go. It is low and clear now but I am expecting high and muddy if the forecast is accurate. It may be a short and wet opener if that is the case. The good thing is this stream comes down fast so I might give it a go Sunday morning as well.

We rent a nice shack in the mountains, real close to where Muttley has his Rip-Torn camp. I go to re-acquaint with old friends wayyy more than worry about catching a fish. It's the same type of comradery that the northern deer camp owners experience..... or experienced in the past, before their traditions were shat all over by the BOC.

I miss how the trout opener was. We had 6-8 that would always get together the night before to have some beers and sit around the fire. Fishing the next day was a social affair catching up with the locals around the stream. Nice dinner Saturday night. Much like with hunting, they all make excuses now why they can't go so it is my, myself and I and has been for a few years now.

I'm waiting until Sunday. Need to be home to fire generator up for the Mrs. Suppose to be a repeat of last weekend. Lost power 14 hours.

Yeah, I saw they are calling for 60 MPH wind gusts on Saturday. Not to pleasant. I will probably take the boat out on Sunday afternoon, but I will be chasing channel cats.

I haven't fished the opener myself since my oldest son was four or five and I started taking him. Now that they are all old enough to go on their own, I skip the crowd and carnival show of the first day that I enjoyed when I was younger. There seems to be a greed that comes out in many fishermen on opening morning that runs counter to the reason I like to fish trout.
Good luck to you who brave the weather on Saturday morning.

Since I mostly have been saltwater fishing last 10-15 years I've only trout fish trout while up at camp turkey hunting. Then I mainly target natives. In the years past when we got fishable ice I fished Hunters Lake in Sullivan County for stocked winter trout.
Best of luck to all heading out tomorrow!

Weather isn't too bad this morning in PA for those that are out. Pretty warm and wind isn't terrible yet.

It was a washout in this corner of the state. Rain last night resulted in high and muddy waters. Very few fisherman. Most that came were walking out by 10. I got to the hole I wanted to fish at 5:00am. By 8am there were 7 of us fishing it. Nobody caught a trout despite me seeing a ton in there just a few days ago. Talking to guys when I was walking out, their experiences were the same.
What a bummer.

Yesterday was wet in Sullivan and the streams were up but it didn't stop anybody. Nine guys fishing the hole in front of my camp. I was one. Caught three 'bows Yesterday and three more this morning. Ice was forming on my rod guides this morning

Finally made it out again last evening for trout after the stream I fished on the opener was recently stocked. Not too many guys out and I did pretty good. Brought 15 to the hand and had quite a few get off. All small rainbows and browns. Nothing more than 10 inches, which is a shame. Almost all caught on a tiny Kastmaster spoon.

Had today off but since my turkey tags were filled I decided to hit a local stream for trout. It hadn't been stocked for close to a month. I walked downstream about 1.5 miles then fished my way back up. Pretty good morning. I found enough to keep me interested. Fished at a steady pace with spinners and brought 6-7 in including one 20 inch rainbow that came out of a tiny little pocket. Even saw three goldens in my travels but they were not interested. Maybe had close to a dozen on total.

I did fairly well on may last couple trips. Finally getting them all on dry flies. Most of the bugs in the air been caddis. I've heard there are sulfurs coming off some streams but have yet to see any on the streams I fished. Most have been pretty decent size, 12-14" and lost a rainbow that was probably at least 16"when it jumped right in front of the net. I expect the dry fly action to be pretty hot until a little after Memorial Day.

Decided to do one last trout fishing excursion to a local water that was stocked for a youth event. I was surprised to see a lot of brookies swimming around. Unfortunately, there were dozens dead on the bottom, most likely from the warming water temps. I had a good day though. Using a 2 inch gulp minnow on a jig head I probably brought in close to 20 small brookies and one decent rainbow.

I would be surprised if it has reached the point of killing trout yet. I have noticed more dead trout in streams over the past couple years. Many fisherman are now practicing catch and release these days. And those caught on bait often swallow the hook and the chance of recovery is very small when that happens. I wish guys would take the trout home to eat when the take the bait deep. With the high temps called for late next week, fisherman should be encouraged to leave the warmer streams alone, or target smallmouth until we get some rain and cooler temps. Many colder streams have good temps all summer long.

It is a 2 acre pond that is pretty shallow and muddy. Lots of weeds already. I did watch a blue heron fly in that quickly stabbed and swallowed three brookies.
