This past summer I bought 4 boxes of Federal Fusion 6.5 CM 140 grain ammo. I went through about a box sighting in and shooting at different distances with no chambering issues shooting 20 rounds. My new Browning X-Bolt dives tacks with this factory round.
Just before hunting season I was shooting some ammo from another box out of original 4 and the ammo smoothly fed from clip to chamber but I couldn't close bolt?? This was only for 2 shells out of 20. I tried feeding those 2 shells directly to chamber(no clip) & same issue. I didn't contact Federal yet but curious if anyone ever had this issue with factory ammo before??

Can you compare the batch # on the ammo boxes? Just wondering if the ammo was from two or more different ammo runs. I'm sure they put that info on the box somewhere.
I assume you checked your chamber for any obstruction....along with the bolt face?
Not the same issue but right when S&W bought out TC I purchased a "premier" (or whatever they called it) barrel in 220 Swift. Every round fired split at the base of the brass. T\C had no other barrels in 220 Swift at the time, so I opted for a 22-250. (BTW...the chamber in the 220 Swift was cut too deep...which I knew after four or five rounds)
I never got he 22-250 to shoot well so I traded it in for a M\L 50 cal which is a tack driver.
However, I was out the cost of 220 Swift dies and brass....and 22-250 dies and brass. Which likely explains why I only have two barrels for the T\C. A 12ga. for turkey hunting and the M\L barrel.

Did you measure overall length of those 2 shells ? Maybe a malfunction at factory caused bullets not seated far enough ?

Thanks for input guys!! All bullet boxes marked with same Lot#DO25S36 plus measured cartridge length & was per caliber specs: 2.825" & 71.8mm. I closely examined the 2 bullets that failed to chamber and think I found something that may have caused chambering issue....not sure? The case extractor groove on the 2 that failed to chamber seems to be ever slightly wider(bottom case) than the ones that chamber perfectly(top case). Pics not the best but per naked eye it's pretty clearly wider. Rim seems narrower on bottom which could cause problems with Browning's extremely tight head space tolerances. Should call Dave in for better pic!! See pic below. Gonna follow-up with Federal.

PS: A loaded round has a max length too, you may have to seat deeper.

I see what you're talking about.....but I'm trying to think how that would make the bolt harder to close. Unless the diameter of the rebated part is larger on the bottom one than on the top one. Dial calipers would tell you that.
The headspace is measured from the base of the cartridge to the shoulder (in this case) of the brass. I know that when I've just neck sized some cartridges, after two or three sizing's I would have to bump back the shoulder as the headspace grew too much.
It will be interesting to see what Federal has to say.

Naw, if the bullet is too long it gets stopped in the rifling....I've been there!! JM

The issue was not with the bolt closing harder but the bolt didn't close at all...locked from closing with those 2 bullets. With the rim being narrower...the head(face) of bullet would effectively be a little deeper. I dunno not being a gunsmith but hope to report back what Federal says. Never had this problem shooting new factory ammo.

Been doing a lil research & issue really isn't all that rare as I originally thought. One shooter said he rec'd $4.00 from Federal to cover 2 bullets that wouldn't load with no explanation. A few also experienced with Hornady ELD's. I only researched the 6.5CM.

I'm gonna bet that Hornady will want those bullets back to examine.

I learned one thing for sure in that I will always cycle the 4 in clip through before hitting the woods.

My Creedmoor tends to jam, but not due to length of cartridge. Don't know why. I thinkmits the sharper shoulder, my brother says I'm short stroking it. Might be that.

Start simple and thoroughly clean the chamber. It sounds to me like something is jammed in there and it doesn't take much.It could be a small stick, weed, even unburned powder. My son was using my 300 wsm all hunting season. He was using some older reloads and after he shot a deer,he showed me a case that split right along the neck and shoulder. When he went to reload at the end of the day,the bullet separated from the case and all the poweder emptied into the chamber.I blew it out with a compressor and then took it to work with me the next day to shoot with a different load.It wouldn't chamber a round so I cleaned the heck out of the chamber and it's worked flawlessly since.

Does that new rifle have a plastic magazine? My grandson’s Ruger American was giving me trouble. I took some fine steel wool to the top lips of the magazine and removed the roughness from them, and it took care of the feed problem on his 243..

Try what I did, it may make a difference. Just run the steel wool over any area the shells come in contact with that feels the lease bit rough. If the magazine will come apart ,like the factory Ruger, it makes it easier.

No plastic magazine issue in my case as when 2 rounds directly loaded in chamber(with clip removed) bolt wouldn't close. Also tried loading 2 rounds in clip...same issue. Good pointer though!!

Spoke to a Federal ammo tech today(Bill ?). He asked for the Lot# on boxes and cked saying there was no reported issues. All 4 boxes had same lot no. He suggested running my remaining 3 boxes(60 shells) through and to see if any issues. I did today & there was no chambering problem outside the 2 in the first box. I told rep I didn't want reimbursement....just wanted to report issue. He insisted on reimbursement and gave me his personal number to text/call results on remaining boxes. Really a knowledgeable guy to kick things around with on the 6.5 Creedmoor, ballistics etc.

Serves yinz right, monkeying with these oddball cartridges? Probably the difference in rim thickness, be my guess? Especially if it's a tight chamber. If case specs are okay and a bullet is seated a bit too far out in the case, a bolt gun will typically just push the bullet deeper when closing the bolt. Bullet ogive touches rifling, it gets shoved back a tad. If the case head spaces on the shoulder (as most rimless, bottle neck cases do) and the rim is too thick, might be the issue here? Two cartridges I tend to load the hottest - 22-250 and 25-06, require a wee bit of shoulder set back about every third reload cycle. Otherwise they just get neck sized. But I keep all brass segregated to each rifle it's been fired in previously.

Shot my old REM 700 06 50 years with never an issue!!😀
