First day of archery and I am setting in front of my computer !
No archery equipment ? But what is even worse is no erg to go out ?
I have just not got the desire to go now days. I got old and the crew I hunted with are gone or like me stiff and sore ?
I know you will be saying " I will never get like this !" Well just wait and see buddy ?
I don't want to climb a tree stand now days either ! I hate the bugs and just how thick the brush is .
I started out may years ago with a stick bow and wood arrows then to a recurve to a compound. I did well with all of them but the old bones and the eyes started to go and I went to a cross bow. This seemed like a good idea ? Then I went into the field with it ! Wow it was heavy and bulky and hard to carry and get thru the bush with. Call me lazy I guess ?
My boys and grandson are out there somewhere today and I will just live the hunt thru their tales of the day .
THE BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE OUT THERE TODAY !

Same here. We have 4 doe tags and two DMAP tags, and property that is loaded with a deer herd that needs some thinning out, along with a few really decent bucks that my better half has her eye on. To warm to let them hang a while anyway. Just not into it anymore. Maybe in a week or three.

I'd bet your blood would start pumping the first time a deer started working it's way toward you if you got out there this morning. I love watching the woods wake up on the first morning of archery season. It's the start of the shortest six weeks of the years.

I will admit, I don't have the drive that I use to. I'm not out today......but I've always considered it to early in the season. I prefer to go out when the rut get's hot 'n heavy. I've grunted and rattled in bucks in the past and it's very exciting to do this. Especially to rattle one in. They come in running....so be ready if your going to rattle!!!

Next weekend for me. Too many things going on here right now, plus next weekend is when a relative is going to Potter and wants to pick up my old Kawasaki ATV that's at camp. Pretty cool here this morning, so I expect quite a few are out around here.
Sunday from 1 to 4 there's a HUSH gathering at PGC/HQ, that I want to get over to.

Events of the past month have really set back my hunting desire. Losing the pup this week was sort of the final straw. Pneumonia hasn't helped either, but that pup did me in

Pneumonia hasn't helped either...You're getting older now and need to take better care of yourself.

I set my alarm to get up this morning.I got up,made a pot of coffee and hung out with the dogs instead of going out.My desire to kill stuff has gradually decreased the last several years and now I have almost no desire.I love being out there and love seeing other people be successful but have almost no desire to shoot anything. It's kinda giving me a little anxiety.

I still have the drive, but fully understand what your saying. I'm 54 and don't hunt nearly as hard as I use to. I still have a little gumption though. I hung a stand on some new property today. It's within 15 minutes of work and I plan on hunting it in the evenings. Goodluck to all.

I don't hunt as hard as I used to either, but I still have the desire to get one. I don't get ex cit ed anymore during the first few weeks of archery season. When it gets good for me is the last three. I will probably be out there most of the days then.

Went thru some of that about fifteen years ago, Doug. Still looked forward to fall and hunting seasons, lost my desire to shoot much of anything. It was a few years after my best friend and long time huntin' bud had passed away. Deer camp wasn't the same, although if my son made it up, that was better. Went a few years without killing a deer, then got on a kick of hunting baldies only with old rifles and iron sights. Still enjoy that. What's also taken the edge off the past few years fore me, has been warm, rainy weather. Can't get the same rush that I did when we had colder, snowy weather for firearms deer. At least the mud issue in the area where I park next to the cabin, got solved last fall. Thanks to a farmer neighbor dumping a ten wheeler load of asphalt road millings, I now have a solid mud-free place for the truck. First time in three years, I didn't come home from deer camp with muddy paw prints inside the truck. Biggest problem now is a lack of mobility. Years ago I loved to still hunt after the first day or two of buck season when the pressure was off. Now I can't cover much ground afoot, so that's pretty much off the table. Last time I killed a buck late in the first week while creeping around in the woods, was 2000.

When I hunt to fill a doe tag, I like to use 44-mag revolvers, or my Marlin 1895 in 45-70. A few years back I picked up 2 Winchester 38-55's and look forward to hunting baldies with one of em!!

Have yet to pop a cap on a doe with the M64 Winchester 30-30 I stumbled onto some years ago. Still high on my list of things to do. Had a hard time seeing the front sight thru the Lyman rear sight in low light conditions. Solved that issue a few years ago, by adding a Sourdough front sight.
It's the right height and has three times the amount of shiny brass insert to get an eye on, compared to the tiny bead on the issue sight.
Should've been carrying the Winchester last year on opening morning, when I thumped the small six point with a 25-06. That buck was well within Lyman sight range. Trying to convince myself to take the 30-30 out on opening morning this year.

I can relate some to every post on this thread. Being a few weeks shy of 72 years young I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me. Everything takes twice as long to do anymore, from getting ready to go out the door. to getting to the stand, sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. The only good that I've seen come from old age is, I'm now a better still hunter, than I use to be, because I no longer can move as fast, even if I wanted too. Thanks for showing me I'm not alone.

No, you are not alone. This getting old stuff isn't for sissies. You gotta be tough, and the older you get, the tougher you have to be.

Talking about going back to and using old rifles. I now do this in doe season, mostly with a pre 64 Winchester 94.But I wanted to shoot a doe again with my fathers old Marlin model 93, 32 win sp. The last time it hunted was December of 1967, just a couple of days after my separation from the navy, and I managed to kill a doe with it. I probably shouldn't of been hunting at all last year due to my back pain, and did a lot of stumbling around while do so. Well I fell down coming back from a watch after my son, daughter in law and some of their friends did a short drive in small farm woodlot. I cracked the stock from the wrist and about 10 inches back, I was sick. I glue it back together with Elmer's carpenter's waterproof wood glue max, the good cream colored stuff. Refinished the stock and it looks good. Unless you know where the crack was it's hard to pick out, due to following the grain of the wood. Need to get it to the range to make sure it will hold up to the recoil. If it doesn't, they still make a replacement for it, so it will be restocked. If it does, we will take it for a walk or two again this year.

I'm just getting soft and losing my desire to kill more than my desire to be out there.I let two doe walk on saturday and didn't even consider shooting them.Part of it was because I didn't feel like dealing with another dead deer.Last night I got home from work and did a recon mission behind the house with no weapon.I had a pretty nice 8 point walk past within 25 yards right at last light. My son was at 76er's in Philly so it didn't bother me in the last to watch him walk.
