Never saw a mangy bear. and I've seen well over a hundred. As have I, Mike. I don't think that the one case (in my phots) out of all of those bears constitutes an epidemic. Mange is around, and has been for some time. The word "epidemic" is sometimes overused (hyperbole?).

Surely they would know when to use the term correctly. Lol. The question is whether or not they have someone trained in epidemiology on staff. I know they have a veterinarian or two. Actually, a few cases of spinal meningitis out of a hundred thousand people might be called an epidemic, but it would probably be more in the line of an "outbreak." Oh, and quit calling me Surely. That is a girls' name.

Call it coincidental if you please, but the increased prevalence of mange in bears here in Potter began with the population increase around 2010. Bear numbers are now more managable and its my opinion that mange has been the largest influence on that. There were multiple years around 2012-2016 where bears with severe mange were a common occurrence. Still lots of bears around, saw 5 this week, but mange seems to have subsided in these parts..

Never saw a mangy bear. and I've seen well over a hundred. Same here Mike & hope my record continues. Saw 4 last year in Sullivan County and all appeared very healthy.
