Ghee.....I dunno if I've ever seen anything "emergency" when it comes to fishing. But.....I can't say that anymore. Yeah Dave me neither but guess the importance of the MD striped bass fishery as far as size regulations impacting a major resources mortality etc etc is of critical importance to some. Think the term "emergency" is caused by the short window of preseason time available in enacting the regulation change. MD DNR is a "ontime/realtime" organization in servicing sportsmen for sure. Other states could learn from MD's "finger on the button" flexibility re adjusting seasons to best serve resource enhancement/sportsmen.

Yeah......I get that. But I just find the word "amusing" in conjunction with fishing. But.....my sense of humor is sometimes.....well....not appreciated by my better half!!

THANKS LOGGY FOR LETTNG US ALL NO IM WONDERING WHY THEY ARE LOWERING THE SIZE O STRIPERS DO YOU THINK ITS BECAUSE MOST OF THE STRIPERS CAUGHT ARE 19 TO 20 INCHES AND HOW MANY 19 INCH ARE CAUGHT AND THEN DIE AFTER THEY ARE RELEASED

There have been mortality studies done regarding released stripers which I think is a factor in this. As the water warms is gets even more critical as the C&R fish get more stressed out reducing chances of survival. I've seen the same approach applied in the flounder fishery.

I had planned a VA flounderin/crabbin trip this week but the water temps are about 10 degrees below bite level. We pushed trip back a few weeks. In fact...in VA they're calling for some snow this weekend!

Waters a lilon the cold side if 53/55 at your transducer. Gettin there though!! On the catfish I always do better with cut bait. Shad was best but not supposed to have onboard even if from fish market since they have no season. Herring is the next best thing. Bunker is also good. Nice channel i caught Port Deposit area early July.

New Striped Bass Regulations Effective May 16
May 14, 2018
Enhanced Conservation Rules on Use of Bait and Hooks; Minimum Size Reduced to 19 Inches
Photo of angler: Fishing at Thomas Point Lighthouse; photo by Kim Cover The opening of regular striped bass season May 16 coincides with new conservation-minded regulations pertaining to the use of bait, gear and hooks. The Maryland General Assembly Joint Committee Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review Committee recently approved Maryland Department of Natural Resources regulations, which will be effective through Oct. 12, 2018. Beginning May 16, 2018, in Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries: Anglers must use non-offset circle hooks when live-lining or chumming; Anglers must use circle hooks or “J” hooks when using fish, crabs or worms as bait, or when using processed baits; and The minimum size for striped bass is 19 inches. “The new rockfish regulations seek to address the shared concerns of anglers, charters and conservationists who have reported high mortality rates of sublegal rockfish,” Fishing and Boating Service Director David Blazer said. “The new rules aim to increase fishing opportunity and success while reducing unnecessary mortality in the bay.” While the emergency regulations are in effect, the department is also moving forward with regulations aimed at making them permanent through the reminder of the 2018 and 2019 fishing seasons. Public comment is being accepting through May 29, 2018, with a public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. May 17 at the Annapolis Friends Meeting House. Staff have begun a proactive education and public relations campaign to ensure that anglers, bait-and-tackle shops, charter boat captains and the Maryland Natural Resources Police understand the new striped bass minimum size and corresponding gear requirements. After the regulations sunset in 2019, the department will use new stock assessment data to determine if the new conservation actions were preventing mortality as designed and intended. I always did best in/around Spencers & Robert's Islands where the ole bridge piling structures remain. Best fishing times are when Conowingo Dam is running the turbines providing decent water flow. Seems tide impact in that area wasn't all that critical. No place for a fiberglass boat plus suggest a good prop guard on motor.
